Memphis, Tenn. (March 28, 2012) –

In conjunction with NBA’s Hoops for St. Jude Week, the Memphis Grizzlies and C Spire Wireless hosted Hoops for St. Jude Night on Tuesday, March 27 when the professional basketball team took on the Minnesota Timberwolves at FedExForum.

The Grizzlies’ own Rudy Gay is an official Hoops for St. Jude ambassador, which includes several other NBA players and coaches, and helped lead the night’s activities. Prior to tipping-off against the Timberwolves, Gay presented a check for $22,222, matching his jersey number, as his personal contribution to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.

C Spire Wireless, the presenting sponsor for the event and the official wireless partner for the Memphis Grizzlies and FedExForum, also donated $22,222 to match Gay’s contribution to St. Jude. “For a quarter of a century, C Spire has been committed to supporting education, strengthening communities and improving lives through its philanthropic initiatives, partnerships and employee volunteerism,” said Hu Meena, president and CEO of C Spire Wireless. “We’re honored to partner with Rudy Gay and the Grizzlies in support Hoops for St. Jude, a unique program that helps sick children receive the gift of life.”

C Spire representatives, Grizzlies Head Coach Lionel Hollins and members of the coaching and broadcasting staffs all wore St. Jude lapel pins as a show of solidarity in support of Hoops for St. Jude Week. Public service announcements promoting the campaign were shown throughout the evening, while a patient and family were given special recognition during the contest. There also was a special National Anthem performance by a St. Jude patient.

Grizzlies’ Hoops for St. Jude Night is a culmination of a nationwide awareness effort for St. Jude that spans the 2011-12 season. During Hoops for St. Jude Week, March 26-30, the NBA comes together - teams, players, coaches, referees, trainers and fans - to help raise awareness and funds for children battling cancer and other deadly diseases at St. Jude. Basketball fans can join the Hoops for St. Jude team in supporting the lifesaving mission of St. Jude by donating at stjude.org/hoops.

Fifty years ago, St. Jude was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas. Its mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other deadly diseases through research and treatment. Funds raised through the Hoops for St. Jude program help St. Jude continue to provide the best care to the world’s sickest children at no cost to their family. It costs $1.7 million a day to operate St. Jude and more than 75 percent of those funds come from the public through programs like Hoops.
